ROL SPORTSCAR CHALLENGE Brands Hatch, 7 September 2003 Season-long pacesetter Richard Chamberlain had it all to do this time out. Saturday’s Porsche Open race left his Porsche 935R with only third gear.
Undeterred, and having worked on the gearbox well into the night with tremendous help from Steve Winter at Jaz Porsche, Chamberlain duly put the car on its customary pole. The latest and greatest threat to Chamberlain’s dominance appeared in the form of Mike Jordan and his Porsche 996RS. Jordan campaigns the car with Mark Sumpter at international level in the FIA GT Championship. Jordan lined up alongside on the front row and the challenge was set. Twenty minutes later an elated Chamberlain emerged victorious from his rather warm cockpit. A controlled drive, eking out a tenth here and there, produced a 7 second margin of victory. Rupert Lewin (Porsche 996 GT2R) claimed third and was the only other car on the same lap despite a drop in fuel pressure in the dying moments. Other Class C finishers were David Lees in his mint green Porsche 911RS and John Griffiths (Porsche 935R). Griffiths had only just made the start having travelled to Dartford to have a tyre changed after a puncture in qualifying. A suspected broken rocker damped his efforts in the second half of the race. David MacMillan (Porsche 911RS) took Class A honours from Henry Firman’s newer machine. The Class B podium was left unoccupied after Philip Harris selected third instead off fifth and buzzed the engine on his Porsche 3.2RSR. The quality was most certainly there though, unfortunately it was a rather small grid.View Qualifying and Race Results in Acrobat
