ROL Sportscar Challenge - Background

Donington Park Race Organisation launched the ROL Sportscar Challenge in January 2003 following requests from drivers competing in races suffering from depleted grids.

AC, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lotus, and Porsche cars, which have run together in other events, are eligible. In addition, to accommodate more cars and help ensure sustainable grid levels, the competitor base will include other marques of similar aspirational sportscars.  All enquiries will be judged on merit.  Some examples could be; Marcos Mantis GT, Morgan, and TVR.

After consultation, an event format of 25 minute races has been adopted in order to provide increased value for money.  Travel costs are a fixed expense, even if it’s a 10 lap dash.  The aim is to focus efforts on a smaller number of events and consolidate grids for future growth.

Races feature rolling starts primarily because they are safer than standing starts, which should help avoid costly accidents.  Standing starts are notoriously hard on machinery.  If rolling starts can prevent some breakages, we believe they are worth adopting.  Finally, it is something different to be enjoyed by, the competitor, the crowd, and potential commercial partners.

As Porsche has always had a significant presence in this racing, a number of rounds have been aligned with the Porsche Open series to allow these competitors the opportunity for a second race at the same meeting.  The double header rounds give this same opportunity to all, with value for money once again being a priority.
